Anambra Police Arrest Suspect in Gruesome Murder and Mutilation of Pregnant Nurse in Ogbunike

A 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command in connection with the murder and mutilation of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.

According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, and dated July 30, 2025, the arrest was made on July 25 with the assistance of residents of Umueri village in Ogbunike. The victim’s dismembered body had been discovered earlier in a soakaway pit, sparking widespread outrage.

The suspect, Nwafor, reportedly confessed during interrogation that she is the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who remains at large. She told investigators that Elobisi called her to clean up bloodstains after the murder and revealed that parts of the victim’s body were sold to native doctors in the area. Further investigation indicates that the victim, a trained nurse, was lured to Elobisi’s house under the guise of providing medical treatment.

Based on information provided by the suspect, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department raided a shrine belonging to one Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile of Itima Amawa village, Ogbunike, in the early hours of July 29. During the operation, police recovered suspected human body parts wrapped in cellophane bags.

The statement added that a manhunt has been launched for the prime suspect and other accomplices believed to be involved in the crime.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, described the incident as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.” He urged members of the public with useful information to assist the ongoing investigation, assuring that the identity of informants will be protected.
