The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 25-year-old Uchenna Uchegbu, a suspected member of a notorious criminal gang responsible for a string of violent crimes in Orumba South Local Government Area.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrest was carried out by operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad in the early hours of June 28, 2025, as part of an ongoing investigation into cases of conspiracy, armed robbery, rape, attempted murder, and murder.
The suspect and his gang allegedly attacked Umucheke Village on June 2, 2025. During the incident, they reportedly blindfolded and tied up a 68-year-old man, robbing him of his belongings. The gang also allegedly raped the man’s 23-year-old daughter during the assault.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect confessed to being involved in a separate attack on May 23, 2025. In that incident, a 52-year-old woman was robbed and raped, leaving her unconscious. She was hospitalized but later died from her injuries.
SP Ikenga stated that the police are leveraging information provided by the suspect to track down other members of the gang and dismantle the network to prevent further criminal activities in the area.
