Anambra Police Arrest Man Supplying Food to Gunmen, Seize Pistol, Ammunition

The Anambra State Police have apprehended a man suspected of supplying food to gunmen operating in various camps across the state. The unidentified suspect was arrested in Nanka, Aguata Local Government Area, during a police-led intelligence-driven patrol on September 22, 2024.

According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was en route to deliver groceries, including three bags of cassava flakes (locally known as garri), which contained hidden gunpowder intended for the production of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

“Preliminary information revealed that the suspect was transporting these items to a criminal camp for the gang’s consumption,” Ikenga stated in a press release. “Upon searching the bags of garri, operatives discovered a large quantity of gunpowder concealed within.”

The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting authorities in identifying and apprehending other gang members involved in the operation.

In a separate incident, police arrested a man named Nelson Wisdom at a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, on September 25, 2024. During this operation, officers from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) recovered a locally fabricated pistol and two live rounds of ammunition from Wisdom, who is reportedly from Etsako East in Edo State.

Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam emphasized the commitment of the police and other security agencies to act on credible information to disrupt criminal activities in the state. “We will continue our operations to thwart the plans of these criminal elements,” he stated.

Both suspects are expected to face charges in court following the conclusion of investigations into their activities.
