Anambra Police Arrest Armed Robber in Mid-Robbery Incident

The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended Nicholas Nweke, a suspected armed robber, during an attempted robbery in Awka.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that Nweke was arrested on December 25 after he tried to rob a victim in a public area. Officers responding to the scene intervened after the victim struggled with Nweke over a firearm.

Authorities recovered a pump-action rifle, five spent cartridges, a mobile phone, and N1,200 in cash from the suspect. During the incident, Nweke allegedly fired shots, injuring two bystanders, who were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital and are reported to be stable.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation.

SP Ikenga noted that timely police intervention, combined with the victim’s bravery, prevented the robbery from escalating.

In a related development, the Anambra State Police Command recently arrested five suspected armed robbers posing as vigilante operatives while targeting shuttle bus passengers in Nibo, Awka South LGA.
