The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old suspected informant of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), over alleged involvement in extortion and terrorism-related activities in Ihiala Local Government Area.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect, identified as Bernard Odinchefu, was arrested on October 1, 2025, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.

Ikenga said preliminary investigations revealed that Odinchefu allegedly coordinated illegal levies on traders in Isseke and Orsumoghu communities, collecting ₦10,000 and above from each trader every month. He was also accused of extorting at least ₦100,000 from families before they could hold burial ceremonies or similar events.

The police spokesman added that the proceeds from the extortion were allegedly remitted to the suspect’s commander in a terrorist camp. He confirmed that Odinchefu is in custody and further investigations are ongoing.

Ikenga quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, as assuring residents of the Command’s resolve to dismantle criminal structures linked to IPOB/ESN. The commissioner stressed that the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to protect communities from individuals exploiting citizens under the guise of agitation.
