The Anambra State Police have successfully apprehended two individuals engaged in a series of robberies on the 2nd Niger Bridge. This landmark structure has recently become a hotbed for criminal activities, with vandals also taking advantage of the situation to target valuable equipment on the newly constructed bridge.
According to a statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests were made by officers attached to the Harbour Division of the Anambra State Police Command during a surveillance patrol on the bridge last week.
The police team, tasked with preventing vandals from pilfering expansion joints, received information about the activities of a gang near the Obosi end of the bridge. Operating covertly, they monitored the gang’s actions and swiftly moved in to apprehend two of the criminals, while the others managed to escape.
During a search of the suspects, two daggers and five SIM cards, previously removed from stolen phones, were recovered. The suspects, aged between 20 and 22 years, hailed from Enugu State and Ebonyi State, respectively.
Commending the police team for their vigilance and bravery in confronting the gang, Commissioner of Police CP Aderemi Adeoye has directed the authorities to locate the owners of the recovered SIM cards. This action is intended to assemble evidence for the successful prosecution of the arrested suspects.
The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens, as efforts continue to address the rising criminal activities around the 2nd Niger Bridge.
