In a significant stride towards curbing criminal activities, the Anambra State Police Command has successfully apprehended a gang of four burglars known for targeting commercial shops across the state. The police’s swift action was prompted by a tip-off received on August 30, 2023, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Disclosing these developments, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, explained that the police acted promptly upon receiving the tip-off. Their intervention involved cordoning off the hideout of the criminal gang, preventing any potential escape. As a result of this operation, all four suspects, who hailed from Ebonyi, were taken into custody. Additionally, a substantial array of stolen items was seized from their possession.
The recovered items were detailed by Ikenga as follows: two motorcycles, two large generators, a wheelbarrow, a deep freezer, three bags of rice, and two sizable iron cutters.
Upon interrogation, the arrested suspects admitted to breaking into a store located in Nanka, within the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, to pilfer the recovered goods.
A press release by Ikenga conveyed that, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, who praised the swift action taken by the newly appointed DPO in Ogidi, CSP Uche Onyinaya, for his proactive approach – having recently arrested a cultist and retrieved a Baretta Pistol – urged all law enforcement personnel to maintain their unwavering pursuit of criminal elements.”
CP Adeoye further directed an extension of the investigation to Nanka, with the aim of identifying the owner of the store and coordinating with the Motor Licensing Office to verify the ownership of the recovered motorcycles. This procedural step is intended to facilitate the return of the seized items to their rightful owners on a bond basis.
The arrested suspects are slated for arraignment in court as soon as the investigation reaches its conclusion. The Anambra State Police Command’s resolute efforts in swiftly addressing criminal activities serve as a testament to their commitment to upholding law and order within the community.
