Anambra: Peter Obi Backs ADC Candidate in Onitsha North 1 By-Election (Photos)
Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has declared his support for Justina Azuka, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the upcoming Onitsha North 1 State Assembly by-election.
Mrs. Azuka, widow of the slain Labour Party lawmaker Justice Azuka, entered the race following public calls for her to succeed her late husband, who was kidnapped in Onitsha on Christmas Eve 2024 and later found dead at the foot of the Second Niger Bridge in February this year.
Her move to the ADC followed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) exclusion of the Labour Party from all by-elections scheduled for this Saturday, meaning the party will not be fielding candidates in any constituency. Party insiders say Labour Party leaders are still mobilising behind Mrs. Azuka’s candidacy to secure the seat.
Peter Obi’s open endorsement further solidifies expectations of a united front behind Mrs. Azuka, even as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) fields Mimih Ikpeazu-Azikiwe, a member of the influential Ikpeazu family, for the hotly contested seat.
