Anambra Government Bans Use of Textbooks for Writing Assignments

The Anambra State government has prohibited the use of textbooks for writing assignments in schools, describing the practice as wasteful and financially burdensome for families.

The directive, announced by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, was issued during a capacity-building workshop for private school proprietors and teachers at St. John of God Secondary School, Awka.

According to the commissioner, the ban is designed to make textbooks reusable, particularly for younger siblings of pupils who will need them in subsequent academic sessions. She stressed that textbooks should be inclusive, reflecting diversity, equality, and the needs of all learners.

“This decision is aimed at easing financial pressure on families while promoting sustainable education. Parents, teachers, and school administrators must ensure strict compliance, and any cases of non-compliance should be reported to the Ministry of Education,” Chuma-Udeh said.

In addition, the state government announced plans to clamp down on elaborate graduation parties, especially at the nursery and primary school levels. The commissioner said the measure followed complaints from parents who felt exploited by the financial demands of such celebrations.

“It has come to the notice of the government that graduation parties have become avenues for financial exploitation by some school owners. Teaching and running a school is a divine call and should not be mortgaged for financial gains,” she added.

The government reiterated its commitment to making education in Anambra accessible, equitable, and sustainable, warning that defaulters would face sanctions.
