Alleged Unlawful Detention of Anambra Teens Sparks Concerns: Police Deny Knowledge
Emmanuel Ogboo, a resident of Ossamala in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra, has raised alarm over the arrest and continued detention of his 17-year-old son, Chinedu Ogboo, since February 16. Mr. Ogboo revealed that his son, along with his 16-year-old colleague, Chima Ossai, was apprehended in connection with a factory fire incident.
According to Mr. Ogboo, the teenagers were accused by their employer, a company manufacturing single-use food packs located on Atani Road, Odoekpe, Ogbaru LGA. The company alleged that they were the last to exit the section where the fire occurred. The teenagers were subsequently handed over to the police, leading to a series of transfers between Atani Division, Okpoko Division, and the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka.
Expressing concern over the prolonged detention, Mr. Ogboo questioned why his son and his friend had been held for 24 days without bail or trial. He highlighted the potential impact on their mental and physiological well-being, emphasizing that they were not involved in any violent or criminal activities.
Legal expert Reginald Uzoechi emphasized that, irrespective of age, no suspect should be held in police custody for more than 48 hours without being charged. Uzoechi labeled the extended detention as a gross abuse of their fundamental human rights and stressed the potential harm of exposing teenagers to extended periods in police custody.
Despite attempts to seek clarification from the Anambra Police, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, claimed unawareness of the matter. The unfolding situation raises concerns about due process and human rights in the handling of juvenile suspects within the Nigerian legal system.
