Alleged Paternity Fraud Shakes Nigerian Families, Ignites Divergent Views

Olanrewaju Kolawole, a resident of Ikire in Osun State, faced a devastating revelation when DNA results from the DDC DNA Diagnostic Center in Osogbo indicated he is not the biological father of his four children. Distraught, Kolawole sought help on a live radio program with his estranged wife, Toyin Tella.

This case adds to a series of paternity fraud incidents gaining media attention in Nigeria. Notably, the Tunde Thomas and Adam Nuru saga in 2021 stirred controversy when it was alleged that Moyo Thomas, married to Tunde, had a secret affair with FCMB MD Adam Nuru, resulting in the demise of Tunde Thomas.

The revelation sparked varied opinions among Nigerians, highlighting the prevalence of paternity fraud in the country. Pius Akah, a social work lecturer, emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach, combining legal measures, education, and support services to address and reduce paternity fraud’s impact.

Marriage counselor Elizabeth Adamolekun urged government regulation on paternity tests to ensure fairness and prevent misuse of results. Lawyer Sam Tokz clarified the legal perspective, stating that the law allows courts to order DNA tests in cases of suspected paternity, emphasizing the civil liability aspect.

Pharmacist Opeyemi Akindele suggested that men save money for DNA testing if trust issues arise, emphasizing the importance of normalizing DNA tests in the early weeks of a child’s delivery. He also recommended women take emergency contraceptives if involved in extramarital affairs.

Deaconess Funmi Ogundipe, representing a church in Oyo State, highlighted that there is no religious prohibition against conducting DNA tests. She emphasized that trust is essential but acknowledged that if doubts persist, there is no sin in verifying paternity through DNA.

In the midst of these revelations, Nigerians grapple with the emotional toll and societal implications of alleged paternity fraud, sparking discussions on trust, family dynamics, and the need for regulatory measures.
