Alleged Budget Padding: Senate Clarifies N3 Trillion Provision, Denies N500mn Constituency Fund

In response to recent claims made by Mr. Ningi regarding the alleged padding of the 2024 budget, the Senate has provided clarification on the matter, dismissing the allegations as baseless.

According to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Yemi Adaramodu, the N3 trillion allegedly added to the budget consists of statutory transfers to first-line charge agencies of government, not hidden allocations or padding. These transfers include allocations to agencies such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and others, which operate independently of ministries.

Addressing concerns raised by Mr. Ningi, who accused the budget of being padded, Adaramodu emphasized the Senate’s commitment to transparency and accountability in budgeting processes. He dismissed the notion of budget padding, highlighting the importance of accurate arithmetic and procedural integrity.

Furthermore, Adaramodu refuted claims of the provision of N500 million as constituency funds to senators, labeling such allegations as mere fabrications. He urged journalists to examine the 2024 budget thoroughly to verify allocations to the National Assembly.

Regarding accusations of regional bias in budget allocations, Adaramodu clarified that allocations are made based on sectoral needs rather than geographical considerations.

In conclusion, the Senate reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the integrity of the National Assembly and stressed the seriousness with which it addresses such allegations.
