Again, National Grid Collapse Plunges Nigeria into Darkness
Nigeria faced a nationwide power blackout on Sunday as the national grid experienced a significant collapse, leaving major cities in complete darkness.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) officially confirmed the incident, pinpointing the grid failure to 11:21 hours on the fateful day.
A statement released by AEDC explained, “The Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) wishes to inform its valued customers that the power outage being experienced is a result of a system failure from the national grid at 11:21 hours today, 4th February 2024, which has led to a nationwide power outage.”
Assuring the public, the statement continued, “Be rest assured that we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.”
Meanwhile, examination of the hourly generation data from the System Operator revealed a sharp decline in power generation. As of 12 pm on Sunday, the generation plummeted to 59.90MWs, with approximately 20 generating plants going offline, excluding Ibom Power and Azura Edo (IPP), which managed to generate 31.90MWs and 28MWs, respectively.
However, by 1 pm, the grid began to recover, reaching 174MWs and steadily climbing to 1,321.75MW by 6 pm.
As of the time of reporting, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not yet responded to this critical development, leaving citizens anxiously awaiting updates on the restoration of power nationwide.
