Again, Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint in Anambra, Kill Officer

On Friday, gunmen launched an assault on a police checkpoint near the Nnobi Police Station, located on Nnobi/Nkpor Road in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack resulted in the death of a police officer, identified as the driver of one of the police vehicles stationed at the checkpoint.

Sources on the ground reported that the attackers had infiltrated the community by lodging in a house adjacent to the checkpoint. They breached a wall to gain access to the compound, forced residents to open the gate, and drove their vehicles inside. The gunmen confiscated residents’ phones, locked them in a room, and threatened them against alerting authorities.

This latest assault follows a similar attack less than three weeks ago, when gunmen targeted a police checkpoint on Omata-Nnobi Road in Nnewi, resulting in the death of another officer and the use of an explosive device.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the attack and stated that an ongoing operation is in progress. The operation was ordered by the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, in response to the incident.

SP Tochukwu emphasized the sacrifice made by the security officer and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore order in the area. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
