ADC to Take APC to ECOWAS Court After Edo Attack on Peter Obi
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced its intention to file a complaint against the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Human Rights. The move follows an attack on Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, and other ADC officials in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday.
Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, reported on X that the attack took place at the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun, an APC chieftain, shortly after Obi and ADC members returned from welcoming Olumide Akpata, the 2023 LP governorship candidate for Edo, into the party.
Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC national publicity secretary, described the attack as part of a broader pattern of political intimidation against opposition figures. In a statement shared on X Wednesday, Abdullahi called the incident an act of terrorism and said the party would report the matter to diplomatic missions across West Africa.
The ADC also criticized statements made by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, alleging that his remarks before the attack—warning that Obi’s safety could not be guaranteed and accusing the party of sponsoring cultism—contributed to rising tensions. Abdullahi added that threats to demolish opposition property violated constitutional protections for political actors.
“Nigeria is not a private estate. Edo State is not the personal property of any party or any governor,” the statement read.
The party said it is compiling evidence of what it described as repeated acts of intimidation by the APC and will submit reports to both diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS Court of Human Rights. Abdullahi emphasized that ADC members and supporters have the right to freedom of speech, assembly, and lawful self-defense, warning that any harm to party members would be the responsibility of those fostering a hostile climate.
The ADC concluded by affirming its commitment to protecting its members and facilities nationwide while urging supporters to continue their political activities without fear.
