ADC Amends Constitution, Ratifies New Leadership at Abuja Convention
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has concluded its national convention in Abuja, where delegates approved amendments to the party’s constitution and ratified a new National Working Committee led by David Mark.
A total of 1,576 delegates were accredited for the exercise, with 1,471 voting in favour of the amendments and 11 votes declared invalid. The outcome, representing about 94 per cent support, was announced by Emeka Ihedioha, who chaired the party’s Electoral Sub-Committee. He confirmed that the amendments were duly adopted at the convention held at the Rainbow Event Centre in Abuja.
Before the vote, the party ratified resolutions from its 97th, 98th and 99th National Executive Committee meetings. These included a waiver of membership requirements, suspension of zoning provisions for executive positions, and the removal of rules requiring that vacant offices be filled by individuals from the same region as their predecessors. The convention also endorsed the dissolution of the National Working Committee led by Ralph Nwosu, with the new leadership under Mark assuming responsibility for the party’s affairs.
In his remarks, Mark described the convention as a significant moment for the party and said it marked the beginning of its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The convention also approved the expulsion of several members over alleged anti-party activities. Those affected include Nafiu Bala, Leke Abejide and Kingsley Temitope, alongside other party members. Officials said the action was taken to address internal disputes and maintain party discipline.
At the event, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission, alleging that the commission was being used to undermine democracy. He called for resistance against what he described as irregularities in the electoral system.
Other political figures also spoke on national issues. Peter Obi expressed concern over Nigeria’s rising debt, stating that borrowing has continued despite the removal of petrol subsidies. Rotimi Amaechi raised concerns about insecurity, citing recent incidents as indicative of worsening conditions, while Rauf Aregbesola criticised the government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, questioning its impact on the country’s economic and security situation.
The convention went ahead despite the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission not to monitor the exercise due to a court ruling. Party members from across the country participated in the proceedings, which concluded with the adoption of constitutional amendments and confirmation of new leadership.
