Abure Reacts to Court Affirming Him as LP Chairman, Challenges Peter Obi to Unite the Party
Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has expressed his gratitude following a Federal High Court ruling affirming his leadership and has issued a call for unity within the party, specifically challenging former presidential candidate Peter Obi to join efforts in reconciling members.
The court, sitting in Abuja, ruled on Tuesday that Abure is the legitimate chairman of the Labour Party, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize his leadership. Justice Nwite’s ruling also validated the decisions made during the party’s March 2024 convention in Nnewi, which established the current national leadership.
In his response to the court’s decision, Abure described the ruling as a victory not just for himself, but for justice and democracy in Nigeria. He stated, “This victory confirms that the rule of law prevails and solidifies the legitimacy of our party’s leadership.”
In a statement titled “A New Dawn for the Labour Party: Victory, Forgiveness, and Unity,” Abure emphasized the importance of coming together after a period of division within the party. He specifically called on Peter Obi to join him in uniting the Labour Party and healing any rifts that may have emerged.
“I urge Peter Obi and other party members to help us unite the party. This judgment marks the beginning of a new era for the Labour Party in Nigeria,” Abure declared. “While we acknowledge that restructuring and healing are necessary, our doors are open to all who wish to contribute.”
Abure also addressed the need for forgiveness among party members, particularly those who previously sought to undermine his leadership. He remarked, “I offer my forgiveness to those who engaged in character assassination and blackmail, especially against my person. However, I believe that forgiveness must be accompanied by repentance and restitution.”
He expressed hope that those who had previously opposed him would reflect on their actions and work towards reconciliation. “Only then can we truly move forward, heal our party, and work for the common good of Nigeria,” he added.
Looking ahead, Abure outlined his commitment to rebuilding the party’s structures and reconnecting with grassroots supporters. He stated, “With the collective efforts of all members, we will continue to fight for the interests of the common man and the betterment of Nigeria.”
