Abia Governor and Sokoto Officials Visit Nnamdi Kanu at Sokoto Prison Amid Tight Security
Abia State Governor Alex Otti, alongside senior Sokoto State officials, visited detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on Sunday. Footage circulating online shows tight security around the facility as the delegation arrived for the meeting.
Kanu has been held in Sokoto since November 21, following his conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges. Justice James Omotosho found him guilty on seven counts brought by the Federal Government, imposing a life sentence on four of the charges and additional terms of 20 and 5 years on two others. The conviction ended a lengthy legal battle that had been closely watched across the country.
His immediate transfer from DSS custody in Abuja to the Sokoto Correctional Facility sparked criticism and concern. His lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, condemned the move, arguing that it was designed to cut Kanu off from his family, legal team, and supporters. Kanu’s wife, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, said she was shocked by the sudden relocation.
Medical worries have also emerged. His personal physician, Prof. M. A. C. Aghaji, wrote to President Bola Tinubu warning that the abrupt transfer could aggravate Kanu’s health condition, describing the situation as medically dangerous and calling for urgent attention.
