Abduction Crisis Grips Nation: Bandits Expand Operations to Major Cities

The wave of abductions, initially prevalent in the North-West, has now engulfed the entire nation. Criminal elements, including bandits, have extended their operations into major cities, targeting residents in Lagos, Abuja, and other urban centers.

The recent killing of four abducted victims from Sagwari Estate Layout in Dutsen-Alhaji area, Bwari Area Council of Abuja, has sparked outrage. Bandits demanded a staggering N700m for the release of seven family members, leading to the tragic death of a 400-level student of Biological Science, Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar.

As the nation grapples with this alarming trend, pleas for help and intervention echo from affected families. A lawyer, Oladosu Ariyo, appeals to the Nigerian Bar Association to aid in the rescue of his kidnapped family members, sharing the heartbreaking loss of his 13-year-old daughter and the continued threat to his remaining children and wife.

The extent of the crisis is reflected in the 2023 Nigeria Security Report, indicating 9,754 fatalities and 4,049 abduction cases nationwide. Regions such as the North-East and North-West bear the brunt, while the South-West, particularly Lagos and Ogun states, experiences a concerning rise in kidnapping incidents.

Political figures, including the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, express deep concern and condolences. Atiku highlights the link between escalating poverty and insecurity, emphasizing the urgent need for the government to fulfill its duty in protecting citizens.

Despite the gravity of the situation, security agencies and government officials face criticism for their apparent silence and lack of decisive action. The Nigerian Bar Association and security experts call for swift measures to address the growing insecurity, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments.
