AAU Graduate Dies in Convoy Crash During Sign-Out Celebration
A student of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, lost his life on Monday, December 8, 2025, after an auto crash that occurred during a sign-out celebration along the Ekpoma–Auchi Expressway near Ujoelen Junction.
Witnesses said the student was part of a convoy of fresh graduates who moved onto the highway shortly after completing their final examinations. The celebration turned tragic when one of the vehicles in the procession attempted to overtake and crashed into a stationary truck.
Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Cyril Mathew, confirmed the incident, stating that one student died while five others were taken to the hospital with varying degrees of injuries. He explained that the convoy had entered the road in a jubilant procession, during which one of the drivers made a dangerous overtaking attempt that resulted in the collision.
Mathew urged students to keep celebrations within campus environments and to place safety above excitement, stressing that life beyond graduation should remain a priority.
Reports from the scene indicated that the group did not adhere to basic traffic precautions, and the deceased student was believed to have struck a stationary vehicle during the overtaking attempt.
