Five Injured After Funeral Bus Carrying Corpse Crashes in Lagos
Panic broke out in the Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos, on Wednesday after a commercial minibus transporting a corpse for burial crashed, leaving five people injured.
The accident occurred around 10 a.m. as the funeral convoy, comprising three minibuses and a Toyota Space Bus, made its way from Ejigbo to Ikotun. Trouble began when the bus carrying the deceased suffered brake failure while approaching Idimu bus stop. The driver lost control and collided with another vehicle in the convoy.
Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as chaotic, with mourners scrambling to help the injured and secure the coffin. A woman identified as Foluke recounted how passengers were thrown off the bus upon impact, with several sustaining injuries. It wasn’t immediately clear to onlookers that the vehicles were part of a funeral procession until the coffin was seen inside the wrecked bus.
The driver of the affected bus explained that the vehicle had earlier developed a mechanical fault but continued on the journey after a temporary fix. “While approaching Idimu, the brakes stopped responding. I lost control and hit the bus ahead of me. I didn’t expect such a terrible incident today,” he said.
Several injured passengers were seen receiving first aid from bystanders. A distressed woman, bleeding from her leg, refused to leave the side of the coffin. A local food vendor reported that at least three victims appeared to have broken legs, with some trapped in the vehicle until they were rescued.
Members of the funeral convoy who had gone ahead were unaware of the crash until they received a phone call. One mourner recounted how they were near Council bus stop before realising the bus carrying the deceased was missing.
Emergency responders later evacuated the injured to a nearby hospital, while the corpse was transferred into another vehicle to continue the burial journey.
