A Coalition of Conscience: Why the New Opposition Alliance in Nigeria Deserves Support, By Arthur Maduka

Why would anyone oppose a group of like-minded opposition politicians coming together to build a formidable counterweight to the ruling party? In a democracy, a vibrant and credible opposition is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

The performance of the Tinubu-led administration, like any government, is subject to interpretation. But one thing is clear: hunger, anger, and economic despair have reached alarming levels across the country. Millions are suffering. In such a climate, the failure of the PDP — Nigeria’s main opposition party — to provide robust, consistent challenge to power is not just disappointing, it’s dangerous. Internal divisions and suspicions of ruling party infiltration have reduced the PDP to a shadow of what it should be.

In this context, efforts by some political actors to form a new coalition should be applauded. Whether these politicians are spent forces or future winners at the polls is immaterial. What matters most is the emergence of a viable, strong, and well-coordinated opposition that can hold the ruling party accountable and restore a measure of balance to our democracy.

This isn’t about personalities or political calculations — it’s about principle. A functioning opposition keeps government on its toes. It sharpens policy. It gives voice to the people. It protects democracy. Those who resist this realignment, or mock its architects, do not serve the interests of ordinary Nigerians.

Enough of docile and patronising opposition. We need courage. We need clarity. And we need commitment to the people, not power for its own sake. If this coalition stays true to its purpose, Nigeria — not just its politicians — will be the biggest beneficiary.

I wish them well.
