“A Blatant Example of State Capture”: Peter Obi Reacts to Edo Gubernatorial Election

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has voiced strong criticism of the recent Edo gubernatorial elections, which saw Monday Okpebholo of the APC declared the winner. In a statement posted on his official X handle, Obi described the elections as a “blatant example of state capture” that undermines Nigeria’s democratic process and values.

Obi asserted that the electoral process in Edo does not reflect the democratic ideals that the nation aspires to uphold. He warned that a flawed leadership recruitment process threatens the country’s future, stating, “Any nation whose leadership recruitment process is so fatally flawed is doomed.”

He called on those in authority to address the current situation rather than rely on it for power. Obi emphasized the importance of the Independent Electoral Commission’s technology, including the IReV and BVAS systems, urging proper implementation to combat electoral fraud.

He also issued a stern warning to individuals and agencies complicit in undermining democracy, reminding them that their time in power is temporary and that their actions could have long-term consequences for society.

Obi lamented the roles played by various stakeholders, including lecturers, in perpetuating what he termed a “charade” that damages Nigeria’s democratic foundation. He reiterated his commitment to building a new and truly democratic Nigeria, affirming that this vision is achievable.

In conclusion, Obi reiterated that contemporary politics should focus not on seizing power, but on saving the nation and ensuring it works for all citizens, regardless of their background.
