9mobile Faces Subscriber Exodus Amid Leadership Shift
Nigerian telecom provider 9mobile is grappling with a significant outflow of subscribers, with over 7,000 customers migrating to rival networks in September alone, according to the latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This exodus coincides with a major ownership change, as LH Telecommunications Limited recently took over the company.
The NCC report highlights that 9mobile accounted for a striking 90% of the 7,886 subscribers who opted for outgoing porting during the month. By contrast, MTN, Airtel, and Globacom combined saw only 10% of the total outflow, indicating that 9mobile is losing market ground rapidly.
As a result of these departures, 9mobile’s active subscriber base now stands at approximately 3.6 million, a figure that leaves it trailing far behind its competitors in Nigeria’s highly competitive telecom sector.
MTN Wins Big in Subscriber Gains
Meanwhile, MTN emerged as the top recipient of new subscribers, welcoming 4,987 ported customers in September—about 63% of the total incoming porting activity. Airtel and Globacom attracted 2,205 and 664 new customers, respectively, while 9mobile registered just 30 incoming subscribers, the lowest of all four operators.
The competitive landscape in Nigeria’s telecom sector is intense, with operators aggressively vying for market share through service quality improvements and attractive promotions on calls and data.
Market Snapshot: 9mobile’s Uphill Battle
The sector is currently dominated by MTN, boasting a massive subscriber base of 78 million, followed by Airtel with 53.7 million active users, and Globacom with 19 million. These numbers underscore the steep challenge for 9mobile’s new leadership as it seeks to halt subscriber losses and restore its position in the market.
The Road Ahead for 9mobile
With LH Telecommunications Limited at the helm, 9mobile faces a challenging path to regaining momentum. Whether the new management can reverse the trend of subscriber decline remains to be seen, as the company will need to adopt innovative strategies to compete against Nigeria’s telecom giants.
