80-Year-Old Grandpa, Wives of Badagry Leader, Son Arrested for Drug Trafficking in Lagos

Nigerian authorities have apprehended an 80-year-old grandfather, along with the wives and son of a Badagry community leader, in connection with drug trafficking activities in Lagos State.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested the octogenarian, Pa Aremu Shojobi, at his residence in Iyana Ipaja on Friday, September 20, 2024. Shojobi, who was found with 14 kilograms of cannabis, allegedly admitted to selling illicit drugs for the past 25 years. According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, the suspect confessed to sourcing his supplies from the Benin Republic and running his drug trade daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Babafemi’s statement added, “Operatives of the Lagos State Strategic Command arrested Pa Aremu Shojobi with 14 kilograms of cannabis at his home in Iyana Ipaja. He admitted to being involved in the drug trade for 25 years, receiving supplies from Benin and selling to customers from his residence.”

In a related operation, NDLEA officers raided the homes of a prominent community leader in Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Alhaji Bashir Mohammed Talba. Although Talba remains at large, searches of his homes led to the arrest of his wives and son. A total of 226 kilograms of cannabis was recovered from both residences. At his Ashipa home, 93 compressed blocks of cannabis, weighing 57.6 kg, were seized from his first wife, Asma’u Bashiru, 35, and son, Sadat Bashiru, 22. Another search at his Aketegbo property led to the discovery of 302 compressed blocks, weighing 168.6 kg, from his second wife, Hauwa Bashir, 42.

The NDLEA also reported an additional seizure on Monday, September 16, 2024, when officers intercepted a Mitsubishi delivery van in the Ojo area of Lagos. The van, marked MUS 720 XH, was carrying 720 blocks of a potent cannabis strain known as Arizona, totaling 390 kilograms.

The NDLEA continues its crackdown on drug trafficking, with multiple arrests and large drug recoveries recorded in recent weeks.
