64-Year-Old Lawyer Arrested for Allegedly Shooting Teenager in Imo

A 64-year-old lawyer, Barrister Donald Mbamah, has been arrested by the Imo State Police Command in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old student, Paul Victor, in Owerri. The victim, a student of Urban Development Secondary School, reportedly entered the suspect’s compound on March 17, 2025, at Area N, World Bank, New-Owerri, to retrieve a football when he was allegedly shot in the buttocks.

According to an eyewitness, the teenager had jumped over the fence into the compound shortly before the incident occurred around 12:34 PM. Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said officers from the New Owerri Division responded swiftly to a distress call from a concerned neighbor who heard the gunshot. Upon arriving at the scene, they apprehended the suspect and rushed the victim to General Hospital, Umuguma. Despite medical efforts, Paul Victor succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on March 20, 2025.

Barrister Mbamah has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further questioning. Investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to recover the alleged firearm used in the shooting. Photographs were also taken at the scene as part of the inquiry.

The Imo State Police Command extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and assured the public that justice will be pursued. Authorities urged the public to remain calm and allow legal processes to unfold without interference. The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded and sufficient evidence is obtained.
