Full List: 50 Federal Lawmakers Write to President Tinubu, Request Release of Nnamdi Kanu

In a move to promote peace in Southeast Nigeria, fifty federal lawmakers from various political parties and regions have appealed to President Bola Tinubu for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The appeal, led by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Hon. Obi Aguocha, and Hon. Zakari Nyampa, emphasizes the importance of invoking Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

The lawmakers argue that Kanu’s release would be a pivotal step toward restoring peace and stability in the Southeast. They have requested the President to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to drop the charges against Kanu and facilitate his release. This, they believe, would pave the way for meaningful dialogue and address the underlying issues fueling regional agitations.

Highlighting the severe security breakdown, economic decline, and displacement of families in the Southeast, the lawmakers assert that President Tinubu’s intervention would demonstrate a commitment to justice and fairness. They point to similar actions taken for Omoyele Sowore and Sunday Igboho, which had positive impacts on peace efforts in other regions.

In their three-page letter dated June 19, 2024, the lawmakers express optimism that Kanu’s release could dismantle the apparatus of violence and unrest in the region, allowing for economic growth and development. They also urge the President to initiate a comprehensive presidential peace initiative to address the challenges in the Southeast.

The signatories, a diverse group of representatives, emphasize that such a compassionate act would enhance national unity and set a precedent for resolving conflicts through dialogue. The full list of signatories includes:
