47 Ebonyi Youths Depart for UK Under State Scholarship Program

Forty-seven youths from Ebonyi State have departed for the United Kingdom on a government-funded scholarship program, marking a significant step in the state’s investment in human capital.

Governor Francis Nwifuru, speaking at the Chuba Okadigbo Airport in Ezza during the send-off, described the initiative as critical to the state’s future prosperity. He encouraged the beneficiaries to represent Ebonyi positively and maximize the opportunities provided.

“This is more than travel; it is an investment in the future of our state,” Nwifuru said, noting that the scholarship program is one of the administration’s most financially intensive projects, second only to major infrastructure developments.

The governor acknowledged initial opposition to the scheme due to its cost, with critics suggesting funds be redirected to roads, healthcare, and other immediate needs. He emphasized, however, that investing in the youth is essential for long-term growth.

“This initiative reflects our People’s Charter of Needs, prioritizing human capital development,” Nwifuru added. “It provides opportunities that previous generations, including myself, did not have and represents a shared investment by the people of Ebonyi.”

Chaka Nweze, Chairman of the Ebonyi Scholarship Board, explained that beneficiary selection was merit-based, primarily targeting first-class graduates but including second-class upper graduates with a CGPA of 3.0 and above. He said 43 additional beneficiaries are awaiting visa approval and will travel later.

All scholarship recipients have signed a bond committing to return to Ebonyi and serve in the state for five years, primarily at newly established educational institutions, before pursuing other career opportunities.
