27-Year-Old Footballer Dies After Collapsing During Match
Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo has tragically passed away at the age of 27, just days after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match in Brazil. His club, Nacional, confirmed his death, citing cardiorespiratory arrest associated with a cardiac arrhythmia as the cause.
Izquierdo collapsed in the 84th minute of the second leg of the round of 16 against São Paulo FC last Thursday. He was rushed to the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, where he passed away at 9:38 p.m. local time on Tuesday (0038 GMT Wednesday).
In a statement on social media platform X, Nacional described Izquierdo’s death as an “irreparable loss.” CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez also extended his condolences, noting that “South American football is in mourning.”
Izquierdo began his professional career with Club Atlético Cerro in Uruguay’s top division in 2018 and joined Nacional in 2022, where he made 33 appearances and scored two goals.
São Paulo won the match 2-0, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores.
