Uruguay Defeats Brazil in Penalty Shootout to Reach Copa America Semi-Finals
Uruguay emerged victorious over Brazil in a penalty shootout, securing a spot in the Copa America semi-finals. The match, which ended 0-0 after regular time, saw Uruguay clinch the win with a 4-2 victory in the shootout.
Despite finishing the match with ten men following Nahitan Nandez’s red card in the 74th minute, Uruguay held their nerve to reach the semi-finals, where they will face Colombia in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday. Colombia advanced to the semis with a convincing 5-0 win over Panama earlier in the day in Arizona.
Brazil’s exit marks a disappointing end to their tournament run. The five-time world champions struggled to find their rhythm throughout the competition and will now focus on preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
The match was a gritty affair with a record 41 fouls, further hampered by a subpar playing surface. Uruguay’s best chance came in the 35th minute when Darwin Nunez mis-timed a header, while Brazil’s Raphinha saw his effort saved by Uruguay’s goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
Uruguay’s manager Marcelo Bielsa praised his team’s composure, particularly during the shootout. “We defended well and played with one less player for 15 minutes, which at this level is significant,” Bielsa commented. Despite creating limited opportunities, Uruguay managed to outperform Brazil in key moments.
In the penalty shootout, Federico Valverde scored the first for Uruguay, while Brazil’s Eder Militao saw his effort saved by Rochet. Douglas Luiz’s miss further compounded Brazil’s woes, allowing Manuel Ugarte to seal the win for Uruguay with a decisive kick.
Brazil’s coach Dorival Junior acknowledged the need for improvement as they look towards World Cup qualification. “We leave the tournament undefeated but not satisfied,” he said. “This process needs patience. We have two years to work before the World Cup, and the first task is to qualify.”
The other semi-final will feature world champions Argentina against Canada in New Jersey on Tuesday. The Copa America final is set to take place in Miami on July 14.
