2027: “We Will Support Whoever Emerges as ADC Flag Bearer” — Atiku Abubakar
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said he will support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election.
Speaking in an interview with DW Hausa, Atiku, a presidential aspirant on the ADC platform, said all contenders within the party are prepared to rally behind the eventual nominee. He described the number of aspirants as limited, contrasting it with previous contests in other parties.
His remarks come amid a dispute involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which recently announced it would halt engagement with the ADC leadership and would not monitor the party’s national convention scheduled for April 14. INEC cited a court ruling as the basis for its decision.
The ADC has rejected the position, arguing that the ruling was misinterpreted. Party officials insist the convention and other activities will proceed.
Atiku dismissed concerns that the situation could weaken the party, attributing it instead to political interests reacting to the ADC’s growing support base. He said the party continues to attract members nationwide.
He also highlighted what he described as the party’s focus on youth participation, noting that many of its candidates for elective positions are young people. According to him, the ADC remains committed to expanding opportunities for youths and women.
On whether he would support a younger presidential candidate, Atiku said he would.
He further expressed concern over economic and security challenges, stating that many Nigerians are seeking change. He linked insecurity in northern states to youth unemployment and limited access to education.
Atiku also criticised the government’s handling of corruption, alleging weak accountability.
The ADC is expected to hold its national convention later this month, where key decisions on leadership and candidate selection are anticipated.
