2027: No One Can Defeat Tinubu, Says Elder Statesman Yakassai

Elder statesman and renowned politician Alhaji Tanko Yakassai has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains the most formidable candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Speaking with reporters in Kaduna, the 99-year-old former adviser to Second Republic President Shehu Shagari said no contender across political platforms has demonstrated the capacity to unseat the incumbent.

Yakassai said the current political climate strongly favours Tinubu, especially as he enjoys the support of his ministers and governors, while the opposition is plagued by internal crises and fragmented alliances. He noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) controls the majority of states, and some opposition governors are also aligning with Tinubu’s leadership.

Commenting on the current political manoeuvrings in the North, Yakassai dismissed claims of a unified regional position, saying such statements remain individual opinions until Northern leaders formally convene and decide. He cautioned against premature speculation, emphasizing that the North alone cannot decide the next president.

The veteran politician also called for a shift from ethnic and religious politics, urging political actors to focus on ideology and programmes that serve national interest. He criticized the frequent defections among lawmakers, attributing them to a lack of ideological foundation in the country’s political system.

Yakassai, a close disciple of the late Mallam Aminu Kano, said political parties should be formed based on shared values and visions, rather than personal ambition. He warned that unless politicians prioritise the welfare of the people over personal gain, the country’s development would continue to suffer.

On national security, he stressed the need for citizen involvement and international collaboration, insisting that government alone cannot solve the growing security challenges. He called for improved intelligence sharing and international efforts to cut off arms supplies and financial backing for terrorists.

Yakassai also weighed in on structural reforms, saying the idea of returning to regional government is unrealistic. He argued that the push for regionalism lacks widespread national support and remains a fringe proposition.

A long-standing advocate of rotational presidency, Yakassai reaffirmed his belief in zoning as a unifying principle that ensures equitable power-sharing across Nigeria’s diverse regions.

Approaching his 100th birthday this December, Yakassai attributed his longevity to divine grace and family genetics. With over 80 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he expressed gratitude for a fulfilling life and continued engagement in national discourse.
