2027: I’m Not Interested in Any Coalition……….. – Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has stated that he has no interest in any political coalition focused solely on gaining power without prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians. Speaking in Abuja on Monday at a national conference on strengthening democracy, Obi emphasized that Nigeria is not functioning effectively, pointing to rising poverty and widespread suffering.

The conference, themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” was organized by civil society organizations, including the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD), Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Westminster for Democracy (WfD), Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA), and the National Peace Committee.

Addressing the possibility of a coalition, Obi stressed the need for discussions centered on Nigeria’s future rather than power struggles. “For me, what is important is let’s discuss Nigeria. Whether we are going to do a coalition, let’s talk about the future of the country. But often, we abandon the country and what we need to do is talk about power grab. I’m not interested in any coalition for the purpose of taking power,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor highlighted key issues such as security, education, and governance, calling for solutions that directly benefit the people. He also condemned the monetization of politics, arguing that it fuels corruption. “We must stop it because what you’re doing is encouraging the stealing of public money. If I steal and use it to win an election, then I get all the power and immunity from prosecution. That is what is driving the stealing,” he added.
