2027 Elections: Political Forces Realign to Dismantle APC Rule
Efforts to mount a formidable challenge against President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated bid for a second term in 2027 have intensified, with opposition parties and coalitions uniting to create what they call the “mother of all alliances.” Key figures and groups have pledged to collaborate in a bid to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and usher in a new era of governance.
Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State, announced plans for a “granite coalition” that would proceed with or without the involvement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking from his hometown of Akokwa, Ugochinyere criticized the PDP’s leadership, accusing them of complacency and failing to provide effective opposition. He vowed that committed leaders across party lines would mobilize forces to form a unified front against the APC.
Adding to the momentum, Otunba Segun Showunmi, former spokesman for PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, unveiled the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative.” The movement aims to revitalize Nigeria’s democracy by addressing electoral integrity issues, restoring ideological focus, and rebuilding voter confidence. Showunmi emphasized that NOMC would function as a civic platform for engaging stakeholders and fostering public accountability, rather than evolving into a political party.
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and the National Consultative Front (NCFront) echoed these sentiments, expressing readiness to collaborate on creating a mega opposition alliance. CUPP National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, described the initiative as critical for rescuing Nigeria from what he called APC’s misrule. “Our goal is to dismantle the corrupt regime and establish a government rooted in transparency and accountability,” Ameh declared. Meanwhile, NCFront spokesperson Mallam Hamisu Santuraki revealed that efforts to build this alliance have been underway since early 2024 and are driven by credible stakeholders determined to establish a government that prioritizes equity and development.
Chief Chekwas Okorie, founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), predicted a significant political realignment by mid-2025. He noted ongoing discussions among various political groups, though he emphasized APGA’s focus on repositioning itself following years of internal strife. Okorie signaled openness to strategic collaborations but dismissed the idea of a full-scale merger, underscoring the party’s distinct ideological identity.
The Labour Party (LP), buoyed by its performance in the 2023 elections, expressed confidence in its potential to lead the coalition effort. National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh emphasized the party’s readiness to collaborate with others in rescuing Nigeria. “The Labour Party is in a strong position to drive this change,” Ifoh said, “and we welcome all efforts that align with the vision of a better Nigeria.”
