16 Burnt to Death in Ogun Road Crash, Gas Cylinder Explosion Suspected
Sixteen people were burnt to death in a lone crash on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State on Tuesday, while three others sustained severe injuries. The tragic incident occurred around 1:00 PM near Buhari Estate and involved a white Mazda bus with registration number KJA 949 YJ.
According to Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the exact gender and identity of the victims could not be determined as they were burnt beyond recognition. The accident was reportedly caused by a fire outbreak in the vehicle, which was carrying 21 passengers. A filled gas cylinder inside the bus is believed to have triggered an explosion.
FRSC operatives from the RS2.2 Abeokuta Sector Command carried out the rescue operation. Okpe confirmed that out of the 21 passengers, 16 lost their lives, three were injured, and two escaped unhurt. The injured victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, while arrangements were being made to evacuate the bodies.
Sector Commander Akinwumi Fasakin expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged the public to exercise caution when transporting flammable materials. He emphasized that such items should only be carried in designated vehicles operated by trained drivers. Fasakin attributed the crash to negligence and advised motorists to prioritize safety at all times.
