Four Burnt to Death in Abuja-Lokoja Highway Collision

Four people were burnt to death in a road crash along the Abuja-Lokoja highway in the early hours of Sunday.

The accident occurred at about 4:33 a.m. near Kwaita village and involved a Toyota Matrix and a J5 Boxer bus, both without registration numbers.

A witness said the Toyota Matrix, travelling from the Lokoja axis at high speed, drove against traffic and collided head-on with the oncoming J5 bus. The impact triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles.

The driver of the Toyota Matrix, who was the sole occupant, and three passengers in the J5 bus were trapped in the wreckage. All four victims were burnt beyond recognition.

“Both the driver of the Matrix car and three occupants of the J5 bus were trapped after the head-on collision as the vehicles caught fire,” the witness said.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident. The official, who asked not to be named, said the remains of the Matrix driver were deposited at the Kwali General Hospital morgue, while the bodies of the three other victims were released to their families for burial.
