15-Year-Old Killed in Minna Gang Clash, Five Suspects Arrested
A violent gang clash in Minna, Niger State, on Saturday claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy, Saidu Udu, and led to the arrest of five suspects. The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that Udu, identified as a resident of Gurgudu, was fatally stabbed during the altercation.
According to Wasiu Abiodun, the Police Command’s spokesperson, the clash involved rival groups from the Gurgudu area of Maitumbi and Kwari-Berger. He explained that the confrontation escalated into violence over a disagreement regarding the distribution of Christmas money allegedly provided by an unidentified benefactor.
Eyewitnesses reported that more than 50 individuals, armed with knives, cutlasses, and daggers, were involved in the altercation. Malik Nurudeen, a local resident, described the scene, saying, “Initially, we thought they were one group, but it turned out they were two rival groups arguing. Suddenly, they started attacking each other with weapons, and one of them was fatally stabbed.”
Police officers from the Maitumbi Division responded to the incident, but the hoodlums had already fled by the time they arrived. Udu was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. In a follow-up operation, the police arrested five suspects linked to the clash, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others who escaped.
Residents of Minna have expressed concern over the recurring violence caused by miscreants known locally as Yan Daba or Area Boys. Many lamented the growing insecurity and frequent gang fights that often result in injuries, robberies, or fatalities.
Despite efforts by law enforcement to address the issue, the criminal activities of these groups remain a significant threat to public safety. The Police Commissioner, Shawulu Danmamman, had recently assured the public of enhanced security measures during the festive season. However, Saturday’s incident highlights the persistent challenges of curbing gang violence in the city.
