15-Year-Old Female Footballer Dies After Collapsing During Match in Mexico
A 15-year-old footballer tragically died after collapsing on the pitch during a girls’ tournament final in Mexico, prompting an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Atziri Ledif Galeana Valencia was playing for Chivas Lcz against Toriz when she suddenly collapsed in the 72nd minute of the match. The incident occurred amid sweltering heat conditions, with temperatures reportedly soaring above 34°C during a nationwide heatwave.
Witnesses say Atziri was treated on-site with CPR, oxygen, and cold compresses in an attempt to stabilize her condition. Despite these efforts, she was later pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital by ambulance.
Following the tragedy, the match was suspended and all scheduled games for the following day were canceled. Authorities from the Michoacan State Prosecutor’s Office have since launched an investigation to determine whether proper health and safety protocols were in place during the tournament.
Chivas paid tribute to Atziri, describing her as a “champion” whose presence left a lasting impact. In a heartfelt message, the club said, “You will always live in our hearts. You have left an indelible mark on the lives of your teammates, coaching staff, supporters, and the Club. Until we meet again to play a more beautiful final, rest in peace, champion.”
Liga Deportiva de Guacamayas, the tournament’s organizing body, also expressed its condolences and shared a floral tribute in Atziri’s memory. “We deeply regret what happened in the final… and express our solidarity at this time with her family, parents, and siblings,” the organization stated.
