Ecuadorian Footballer Slammed for Hiding Under Bed as Kidnappers Took Wife, Son—Literally Missed the Match of His Life
Ecuadorian footballer Jackson Rodríguez is drawing heat online after admitting he hid under his bed while armed men stormed his home and kidnapped his wife and five-year-old son. The 3am home invasion on Wednesday, April 23, at his residence in Guayaquil’s Mucho Lote 2 neighbourhood, has sparked national outrage—and more than a few sarcastic memes.
Rodríguez, a defender for top-flight club Emelec, says he listened in horror as the intruders broke down his door, demanded to know where he was, and made off with his family. He told authorities he peeked out the window and watched them flee in a gray double-cab pickup truck.
The incident is believed to be part of a broader surge in violence tied to organised crime groups wreaking havoc across Ecuador. Law enforcement sources suspect the gang may have originally targeted Rodríguez himself. The country has been in a state of emergency, with President Daniel Noboa vowing to crack down on the armed syndicates turning neighbourhoods into warzones.
Guayaquil, in particular, has seen a spike in brutality. Just last month, 22 people were killed in a gun battle between rival gangs in the northern area of Nueva Prosperina.
While many sympathise with Rodríguez’s terrifying ordeal, others on social media have been quick to question his instincts under pressure. One commenter quipped, “Emelec might want to reconsider his position—doesn’t seem great under attack.” Still, the focus remains on safely recovering his wife and child, as police continue to investigate the kidnapping.
