Zamfara Launches Own Security Outfit in Effort to Tackle Insecurity
In a determined move to enhance security within its borders, the Zamfara State government, led by Governor Dauda Lawal, officially introduced the Community Protection Guards (CPG) on Wednesday. The initiative aims to collaborate with existing security forces to combat the prevailing challenges of insecurity in the state.
The unveiling ceremony, held at the Trade Fair complex in Gusau, drew the presence of six other North-West governors, namely Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Sokoto. Governor Lawal, in a statement released by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, emphasized the state’s commitment to adopting a multifaceted and multi-dimensional strategy to address security concerns.
Last year, the governor sanctioned the recruitment of 5,200 guards across all 14 Local Government Areas, and on Wednesday, 2,645 Community Protection Guards successfully graduated from the inaugural training batch. Governor Lawal, addressing the gathering, highlighted the necessity of comprehensive reforms to stimulate development and restore order across various sectors of the state’s economy.
The governor’s decision to establish the Community Protection Guards, locally known as Askarawa Zamfara, was rooted in the understanding that neglecting public policy advancements contributed to the socio-economic challenges faced by the state. The governor expressed gratitude for the support received through the democratic process, noting that the first batch of guards had undergone rigorous training, drilling, and rule-of-engagement comprehension to effectively collaborate with security agencies.
Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Radda, and Chairman of the North-West Governors Forum, reaffirmed their collective resolve not to negotiate with bandits, emphasizing unity against banditry and insecurity in the region. Former National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Muhammad Gusau (retired), commended Zamfara State’s initiative in establishing the Community Protection Guards, acknowledging the significance of their role in enhancing security within communities.
