“Wike Once Blocked EFCC Officers From Arresting His Judge Friend as Rivers Governor” – Sowore
Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) leader, Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of obstructing law enforcement during his tenure as Rivers State governor.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Sowore linked Wike’s past conduct to a recent confrontation between the minister and soldiers in Abuja. The activist claimed that as Rivers governor, Wike once stopped operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from arresting a judge who was reportedly his friend.
Sowore also criticised the Nigerian military, accusing senior officers of abandoning their constitutional duty of protecting the nation’s borders to engage in land-related disputes. He described the situation as a reflection of corruption and misplaced priorities within the country’s leadership.
“The military’s primary responsibility is to safeguard the country’s borders, but instead, it is devoting resources to protect a parcel of land for a high-ranking officer, allegedly acting on orders,” Sowore wrote. “This pathetic scenario shows the pervasive self-interest among officials who cater to a privileged few, with Wike not being an exception.”
The statement followed a tense clash in Abuja earlier on Tuesday, when soldiers reportedly prevented Wike and officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) from accessing a disputed piece of land.
A video obtained by *SaharaReporters* showed the minister confronting a soldier who blocked his convoy. Wike was seen angrily accusing the officer of obstructing government duties, while the soldier maintained he was acting on lawful instructions.
Sowore described the episode as part of a wider pattern of corruption and abuse of power among Nigeria’s political and military elite, warning that such conduct undermines the nation’s security and governance.
