“You See How It Feels to Be Persecuted” — Sowore Confronts Malami in Court
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore confronted former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, in an exchange that drew attention inside the court and online.
In a video circulating on social media, Sowore was seen addressing Malami over the legal challenges he is facing, linking them to concerns previously raised about the justice system during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“You see how it feels now to be persecuted,” Sowore told Malami. “When you were with Buhari, you were bragging. We warned you then that there was failure in the justice system, but you didn’t listen, and now the system is dealing with you.”
The exchange took place within the court premises, attracting reactions from lawyers, litigants and other observers.
During the encounter, Sowore also offered Malami an orange beret associated with his Revolution Now movement, describing it as “a revolutionary cap,” while urging the former minister to join the movement.
He added that Malami’s current experience reflected wider issues within the Nigerian justice system.
“At least I’m glad that you are strong. We are not all on the same side; even the oppressors are oppressing you now,” Sowore said. “As far as the Nigerian project is concerned, no matter how powerful you people are, we will never support you. We are resilient till tomorrow.”
Malami responded briefly, maintaining confidence in his legal position.
“I can never be down. I have been attending all my court sittings. I will keep attending. And I remain strong,” he said.
Malami is facing charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), including allegations of money laundering, unlawful possession of firearms and unlawful acquisition of assets.
He is also challenging an interim forfeiture order on some of his assets, arguing they were lawfully acquired.
