Wike Bans Used Items Markets, Scavenging in FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a two-week ban on used items markets, commonly known as “Panteka,” in the FCT. The directive, which takes effect from Tuesday, January 14, 2025, was revealed during a meeting of the FCT Security Council.

Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, shared the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Alongside the ban on Panteka markets, the minister also prohibited scavenging activities within Abuja city and its surrounding areas. Scavengers are now restricted to operating solely at designated dump sites.

The minister emphasized that individuals caught vandalizing public infrastructure would face prosecution, with charges ranging from economic sabotage to attempted murder.
