“Wicked Set of People”: Bishop David Abioye Slams Nigerians Denying Christian Genocide Claims
Nigerian cleric Bishop David Abioye has strongly criticized citizens and officials who deny that Christians are being targeted in what some have described as a genocide in Nigeria.
The senior pastor, who serves under the Living Faith Church Worldwide, condemned those dismissing reports of systematic attacks on Christians, calling them a “wicked set of people.” His comments come amid ongoing debate following remarks by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who recently alleged that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide with the backing of the Federal Government. Nigerian authorities have since rejected the accusation, insisting that the violence in the country affects both Christians and Muslims. Some Christian leaders have also refuted claims of a targeted campaign against their faith.
Speaking during a church service, Bishop Abioye said, “There is a lot of distortion going on. People claiming there is no genocide of Christians in the nation. Information with facts can never be thwarted. You see people buried in hundreds and you say there is no genocide. What a wicked set of people.”
He acknowledged that other groups have also suffered killings in different parts of the country but maintained that the attacks on Christians were evident and spreading southward. “Agreed there are others killed in other places for other reasons, but this one is very clear. And gradually it is eating down to the South—South West and South East—and many so-called leaders, for their personal interest, are claiming it is not true. Selling out their faith, if they have it at all,” he said.
A video of Bishop Abioye’s statement has since circulated online, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians.
