Why You Should Avoid Licking Your Lips Too Often – Dermatologist

In an interview on April 2, 2025, Folakemi Cole-Adeife, a consultant dermatologist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), highlighted the skin risks associated with licking your lips too frequently. She explained that this common habit can lead to a condition known as lip licker’s dermatitis (LLD), which causes dry, cracked, and peeling lips.

Cole-Adeife clarified that LLD occurs due to the irritation caused by saliva, which, while naturally present in the mouth, can harm the delicate skin of the lips when constantly exposed. She noted that saliva is slightly alkaline and disrupts the skin’s natural barrier, leading to inflammation, especially for individuals who frequently lick their lips.

The dermatologist recommended avoiding this habit and suggested alternatives such as chewing gum. She also emphasized the importance of moisturizing the lips, recommending emollients like Vaseline to help maintain hydration.

Additionally, Cole-Adeife pointed out that products like toothpaste, lipsticks, and other cosmetics could also contribute to dry and cracked lips through allergic reactions. She advised women in particular to carefully check their lip products for potential irritants.

Dehydration, according to Cole-Adeife, is another key factor that can contribute to lip dryness. To prevent this, she recommended staying hydrated and regularly applying moisturizing products such as Vaseline or creams containing hyaluronic acid, especially before bed. Lastly, she urged people to choose lip balms with sunscreen to protect against sun damage.
