Why We Imposed Visa Restrictions on Nigerians – US Envoy
The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., has said that the recent visa restrictions announced by the U.S. government are intended to strengthen security procedures and are not targeted at Nigerians.
Mr Mills made the clarification on Sunday in Abuja while addressing journalists during the visit of a United States Congressional Delegation to Nigeria. He explained that the presidential proclamation, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026, affects specific visa categories and forms part of broader efforts to secure U.S. borders and protect American communities.
According to the ambassador, the review process focuses on improving vetting standards and ensuring the availability of credible information in visa applications, rather than penalising Nigerian citizens. He noted that the proclamation clearly outlines the visa categories that may be affected and also provides exemptions for certain groups.
Mr Mills said the exemptions include holders of official and diplomatic passports, as well as individuals travelling to the United States for religious purposes. He advised visa applicants and members of the public to consult the official website of the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria for detailed information on the affected visa categories and applicable exemptions. He also encouraged those with specific concerns to use the embassy’s designated communication channels for further guidance.
Also speaking at the event, the leader of the U.S. Congressional Delegation, Representative Bill Huizenga, described visa reviews and restrictions as routine tools used to promote compliance and cooperation between countries. He stressed that such measures are not punitive and are not aimed at ordinary citizens.
Mr Huizenga added that visa reviews are commonly applied in different parts of the world and are primarily focused on government systems and processes rather than the people of any particular country.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the U.S. government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong people-to-people ties with Nigeria despite the announcement of the visa reviews. The government described the measures as part of broader engagement efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation while addressing shared security concerns.
