“Why We Chose Yakubu, Fani-Kayode, Omokri” — Presidency Defends Tinubu’s Ambassadorial Picks
The Presidency has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to include former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, ex-Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, and former presidential aide Reno Omokri among his latest ambassadorial nominees, emphasizing loyalty, national service, and strategic competence as guiding factors.
Demola Oshodi, Senior Special Assistant (Protocol) to the President, explained on Arise News The Morning Show that appointments of this nature naturally attract both support and criticism, but must strike a balance that serves the administration’s objectives. “We voted for him. We give him the right to choose his executives, so we have to trust his judgment,” he said, stressing that Nigerians should recognize the considerations behind the President’s choices to ensure effective governance.
Oshodi described the selections of Yakubu, Omokri, and Fani-Kayode as both political and strategic, noting that non-career diplomats are often chosen for their loyalty and understanding of the administration’s vision. Speaking on Yakubu’s record, he highlighted the former INEC Chairman’s oversight of the 2019 and 2023 elections, which were widely regarded as successful. “These non-career diplomats are political. Their first priority is loyalty. They have been loyal to the administration and understand its vision,” Oshodi said.
He added that Yakubu’s national service, ethnic and state representation, and overall competence contributed to his nomination. “I don’t know specifically the President’s judgment on the professor, but his national service has been exemplary. That is why he has been rewarded with this high office,” Oshodi explained.
Addressing Fani-Kayode’s inclusion, Oshodi maintained that personal controversies do not disqualify individuals from diplomatic roles. “The President’s reason for appointing diplomats is based on how he assesses their competence and capacity. Some countries and situations require certain skills and attributes,” he said, noting Fani-Kayode’s extensive service in various capacities. “Being divisive does not eliminate him from serving further. Everyone’s personal life is personal. The President’s decision is based on national service and, in many ways, a balance of competence.”
The ambassadorial list has been submitted to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation, prompting widespread public discussion on the selections.
