Why Tinubu, Shettima Should Resign to Allow Akpabio Conduct a Fresh Presidential Election – Datti Baba-Ahmed
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the presidential running mate of the Labour Party (LP), has called for the resignation of President Bola Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shettima, to make way for a fresh presidential election. During an interview on Arise Television, Baba-Ahmed asserted that Senate President Godswill Akpabio should be given the opportunity to conduct a new election following the resignation of the incumbent president and vice-president.
Baba-Ahmed’s strong statement stemmed from his belief that Tinubu and Shettima were fraudulently inaugurated after the 2023 presidential election. Consequently, he made it clear that the LP would not engage with what he perceives as an illegitimate government.
In his own words, Baba-Ahmed exclaimed, “Can Tinubu and Shettima just resign and let the Senate President conduct another election? They were fraudulently sworn in, and we will not work with an illegitimate government. If it is not constitutional, we are not touching it.”
These remarks come on the heels of a press conference held by the LP’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during which he accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Supreme Court of incompetence in handling election matters. The situation is bound to stir further debate in the political landscape as Nigeria watches how this unfolding drama will impact the nation’s leadership.
