“Why Send Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto Prison?” — Lawyer

 

Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu, has raised strong concerns after confirming that his client has been moved from the Department of State Services facility in Abuja to a correctional centre in Sokoto. He disclosed the transfer on Friday through a post on X, stressing that the development places Kanu at a significant distance from those responsible for his defence and personal welfare.

 

Ejimakor said the relocation has effectively cut Kanu off from easy access to his lawyers, relatives, and supporters, a situation he described as troubling given the sensitive nature of his ongoing legal and health issues. He questioned the reasoning behind placing Kanu in a facility so far from the people and resources essential to his case, noting that earlier political convictions in Nigeria saw convicts sent to locations considered more neutral in relation to regional tensions.

 

The lawyer urged the public, particularly people from the Southeast, to remain calm but insisted that the choice of Sokoto for Kanu’s imprisonment raises serious concerns. His remarks followed Thursday’s ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which sentenced the IPOB leader to life imprisonment on terrorism-related charges.
