Why S-East Won’t Join Protests Against Hardship — Umahi

Former Ebonyi Governor and current Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, addressed the media in his hometown, Uburu, Ohaozara local government area of Ebonyi State, shedding light on the Southeast’s decision not to partake in nationwide protests against the soaring cost of living.

Umahi attributed the current challenges to cumulative effects from past administrations, emphasizing President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing these issues through various policies and programs. He highlighted the Southeast’s favorable treatment, citing the appointment of individuals from the region to key positions, including the first Minister of Works from Southeast extraction.

The Minister acknowledged ongoing projects in the region and argued that, with these initiatives, the Southeast lacks moral justification to join protests against the President. He urged residents not to be swayed by external influences and to refrain from participating in demonstrations.

Umahi criticized the recent NLC protest, labeling it as unhealthy and unreasonable, while calling for patriotism among the populace. He contextualized the prevailing challenges, pointing to longstanding issues such as farmers/herders clashes, insecurity, and kidnapping, which have adversely affected food production.

Reflecting on his past role as the chairman of the NEC committee on resolving farmers/herders clashes, Umahi underscored the complexities involved and the time required to address such multifaceted issues. He stressed that expecting a resolution within nine months, as with the current administration, is unrealistic.

In conclusion, the Minister encouraged a comprehensive understanding of the historical context and urged citizens to be patient as the government works towards resolving the intricate challenges facing the nation.
